You need XScreenSaver 5.43 or later, and systemd 221 or later or elogind. You might need to add a setting to start it when gnome is launched or a line in ~/. Recent versions of XScreenSaver automatically lock on suspend. Set "Turn screen off when inactive for" to "Never."
